Climate for Change

In 2009, FACT is exploring how humans can be invested in the change needed to sustain civilization and examining the multiple crises affecting the world: ecological, financial, food, housing. Is society itself becoming unsustainable?

The 21st century has finally hit and there is an energy in the air - how do you respond? Forget the eco-art and bring on local, national and international debates, actions, contexts, struggles and solutions.

Climate for Change is a unique experiment in activism, engagement and networking, examining the multiple crises affecting the planet - from ecological to financial, food to housing. With residents from Eyebeam's Sustainability Research Group, Stefan Szczelkun, Melanie Gilligan and more.

In Gallery 1, a range of groups will take up residence in an environment created from leftover building materials from 2008's Capital of Culture year, questioning the validity of the 'eco-art exhibition' and bringing together different perspectives. FACT hands over the keys to the door and Gallery 1 becomes a social hub for meetings, discussions and workshops, allowing Merseyside grassroots networks to practice and imagine new models of governance and organising - live in the gallery space.

The existing model of art has finished and we need to locate a new model of art.

This is the third part of a series of projects looking at materialising a new model of art under the name of Post Autonomy. In the third stage we will look at defining that moment which follows leaving behind the existing model of art and before the next model of art is constructed, in other words the event will look at that moment of waiting in order to locate the language and representation to define and locate a new model of art. In developing a new model of art we need to locate new spaces for art, here we will look at the image of the blind space of the chat room linked to the collapse and invisibility of existing venues for art, to start to build our new model,

During this moment or gap we do not know what art is… where the spaces for art can be found….nor notions.. of the artist and audience…

The script is intended as the basis for developing a participatory script for a performance and vocal work

This will be the main form that will link and tie together the different people who enter and exit the project. It is intended to be as flexible as possible by collecting together random disconnected thoughts, observations, images etc from each person while working through the activities, workshops and walks planned over the next few weeks - that will look at materialising post autonomy.

I understand this intention to imply at its base the possibility of locating the thinking and representation of an unknown concept. This process allows the possibility to put the existing thinking into question enroute to the construction of a model and thinking that is more suitable to a current contemporary cultural practice. This means that each person who enters the project is on an equal basis collectively organising a program necessary to develop the thinking and language necessary to locate this concept. So that it is the working through of the processes that you need to work through that is the priority.

The space of post autonomy

David Goldenberg (UK) will develop a script by mapping notions of Post Autonomy with numerous interested and engaged people. This will lead to a vocal work to be staged in and around a floor drawing.

The event will look at the practical steps necessary for materializing the space of Post Autonomy, and how to navigate that space.

The new work continues the London based artist David Goldenberg’s ongoing series into the mental image of Post Autonomy, and develops ideas first examined in a work for the10th Istanbul Biennial in 2007 that revolved around the questions “How and where is it possible to materialise the space of post autonomy?”

A script for a verbal work, made in collaboration with people who enter into the project, composed of observations and transcripts of discussions will be the main vehicle to knit together and reflect the spectrum of thinking, decisions, actions, points of view that take place during the course of the event. The verbal work is planned to be presented by local people in and around a floor drawing at the end of the project.

To establish the space for post autonomy requires locating new spaces for art in this case a space outside or beyond a Euro-centric tradition of art. Here the process of thinking through and understanding the mental image of post autonomy is equivalent to establishing a new model of art. The project of Post Autonomy therefore takes the form of a thought experiment that imagines how a new model of art is able to be constructed now when no new models exists, how to recognise a new model, the use of a new model, and how a new model is capable of resolving the many problems and contradictions inherent in the existing model, and finally how to communicate ideas about this new model? This questioning takes place around the visual aid of a floor drawing, and a programme of activities, discussions and online debates intended to explore mapping and understanding the space of post autonomy represented by the area marked out by the floor drawing.

To understand the restrictions and problems inherent in the Euro centric tradition of art we will look at the roles of Biennials and Documenta, and any other event, that promotes and exports a Euro-centric tradition of art into a Global context, while also questioning the suitability of this model within a Global context. The project specifically address’s the failure or inability for problems about the specific role of a Euro centric tradition of art to be resolved within the existing space of a Euro-centric tradition of art through designating a space where these problems can be resolved i.e. the model represented by the space of post autonomy.
